What is Spinosad

Spinosad is a kind of veterinary API. 

Spinosad, an insecticide derived from a soil fungus, is also thought to target nAChR in insects (Table 3.1) (Narahashi, 2002). Resistance to spinosad has been documented in several insect species, both in laboratory-selected and field populations (Sparks et al., 2012). In Drosophila, a knock-out mutation of Dalpha6, a gene coding for a nAChR subunit, resulted in a 1181-fold increase in resistance to spinosad (Perry et al., 2007). In M. domestica, spinosad resistance is recessive and has been mapped to autosome 1. Recently, it has been suggested that certain P450s may play a role in M. domestica resistance to spinosad in female flies collected in Denmark (Markassen and Kristensen, 2011). Widespread resistance to spinosad has been noted in Plutella xylostella in Hawaii and Thailand (Zhao et al., 2002). Insects taken from the fields in Hawaii and further selected in the laboratory displayed incompletely recessive resistance.

Spinosad is used as a monthly treatment for flea infestations. After administration, spinosad can kill fleas within 30 minutes and has complete kill within 4 hours. Efficacy may decline after the initial 2 weeks of treatment in areas with heavy flea populations, and efficacy for treating fleas may be better if administered every 2 weeks, than once per month in some dogs.

Spinosad plus milbemycin is indicated for prevention of heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis), as well as for killing fleas (Ctenocephalides felis), and the treatment and control of adult hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum), adult roundworm (Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina), and adult whipworm (Trichuris vulpis) infections in dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age or older and 2.5 kg of body weight or greater.

There have been many developments over the last few years in the area of flea control for dogs. One of those treatment methods is called Spinosad, an ingredient in flea tablets which provides your dog with on-going, 30-day flea control.

Spinosad is the active ingredient in the tablet whose trade name is Comfortis. The flea tablet is produced by Eli Lilly and Company and was introduced to answer the call for an oral tab that offers longer-term protection from fleas.

The Comfortis flea tablet allows a dog owner to spend less time and money on tablets. Traditional flea tablets such as Capstar are becoming less popular because, although the tablet kills fleas, pets need to be given weekly and even daily doses of insecticides in order for the pill to be effective long term. This poses a problem not only to your pet’s health but to your wallet as well.

In contrast, Comfortis with Spinosad allows a pet owner to give the pill to their dog just once a month in order to be protected. The tablet will also kill any fleas that are currently living on the animal almost instantly.
